THE BEYOND WITHIN
THE LSD STORY
SIDNEY COHEN, M.D.
Hallucinogens, the drugs that induce visionsand other abnormal states, have been verymuch in the news of late. Unhappily, it has beentheir more irresponsible uses that werespotlighted.Dr. Sidney Cohen tells with precision and re-straint the story of the most interesting amongthem, LSD, in this book. He has long workedwith the drug under hospital conditions and isaware both of its possibilities and itsdrawbacks. He gives many detailed accounts ofLSD feelings in different subjects, and they arefascinating and colorful. He indicates the usesand possible uses of LSD in tapping theunconscious or the abnormal mind, and theusefulness of this for therapists. He discussesLSD in terms of "model psychosis" or "instantZen." He treats mystical experiences andvisions in terms of what we have learned fromthese drugs. In a fascinating chapter hediscusses hallucinogens for possible waruse—they have been considered as incapacitat-ing agents that might limit lethal warfare—andhe shows how they too would lead to death."A pill does not construct character, educatethe emotions, or improve intelligence," writesDr. Cohen. "It is not a spiritual labor-savingdevice, salvation, instant wisdom, or a shortcutto maturity. However, it can be an opportunityto experience oneself and the world in a newway—and to learn from it."The book is free of medical jargon. It tells thestory of
LSD—which is full of
brilliant color andbright new deep perception—trying to keep theexperience intact. We all live in a world ofsensation, and it is sensation itself that isilluminated here. Dr. Cohen explores LSD as apossible gateway to the vastness within.Jacket design: Everett Aison
